How well do we really know the travellers we are trying to reach?
Travel businesses increasingly recognise the importance of understanding different communities and creating experiences that are welcoming and inclusive. But in trying to define audiences (the Muslim traveller, the Black traveller, the disabled traveller, the solo female traveller, the LGBTQ+ traveller) we can sometimes make assumptions that don't reflect the complexity of people's lives.
Because none of us is defined by just one aspect of our identity.
Beyond the Script: The Traveller You Think You Know is an interactive conversation from the Inclusive Travel Forum and Halal Travel Network, exploring how language, identity and intersectionality influence the way travel experiences are designed, marketed and delivered.
What we'll explore
Rather than focusing simply on the "right" and "wrong" words to use, we'll consider what happens when assumptions about identity influence the information, products and experiences we offer travellers.
Why people who appear to belong to the same traveller segment may have very different needs, expectations and preferences.
How intersectionality can help travel organisations better understand the complexity of their customers.
When labels such as Muslim-friendly, halal-conscious, accessible, family-friendly and inclusive are helpful — and when travellers need more specific information.
How halal-conscious travel can remain centred on Muslim travellers while recognising that some of its values, products and experiences may also resonate with people from other communities.
How better questions and better information can give travellers greater confidence to decide whether an experience is right for them.
Put yourself in the traveller's shoes
This won't be a presentation-led webinar.
We'll work through practical travel scenarios and invite participants to consider three simple questions:
What assumption are we making?
What information might be missing?
What could we do differently?
The aim isn't to give you a new list of rules. It's to help you become more curious about the people behind the customer segments, challenge assumptions and think differently about how your organisation communicates with and designs experiences for today's traveller.
Who should attend?
This session is designed for people working across the travel and tourism industry, including:
Marketing and communications professionals
Tourism boards and destinations
Tour operators
Travel agencies
Hotels and accommodation providers
PR teams
Customer experience teams
And anyone involved in designing or communicating travel experiences.
Whether you're already working on inclusion or just beginning to think about these questions, you'll leave with practical ideas you can take back to your organisation.
About the collaboration
The Inclusive Travel Forum and Halal Travel Network share a commitment to helping the travel industry better understand the people and communities it serves.
This collaboration brings together perspectives on inclusive travel, intersectionality and halal-conscious tourism to create a practical conversation about how the industry can move beyond assumptions and provide travellers with the information, choice and confidence they need.
